Rain Fails to Dampen Successful Sky Ride Sheffield Cycling

Cycling was once again on the agenda in Sheffield, with the first ever Sky Ride coming to the streets of the Steel City. There were some torrential conditions on offer for those braving the elements; but there was still an impressive turnout despite the weather.

Hundreds of cycling enthusiasts took to the 5-mile route; which frequented Sheffield highlights such as Bramall Lane and Ecclesall Road. Naturally, there were less than the 3,000 who registered for the event that showed, but that was understandable given the impact of the aftermath of Hurricane Bertha.

Variation in Participants

There was a real mix of participants; with families, work colleagues and seasoned locals all trying their hand at the route. Following the unprecedented success of the 2014 Yorkshire Grand Depart, it wasn’t at all surprising to see the varied spectrum of people taking part.

Wheelie Good Guys were at the event; and you can now view some of the images here; as well as the entire range of our chosen photographs in our exclusive Sky Ride Sheffield gallery here.

It is hoped that the event will continue to place emphasis on the need to improve cycling infrastructure within Sheffield and other UK cities. With cycling participation on a continually increasing trend, it is a topic that is becoming harder for the politicians to ignore.

The presence of entire families at Sky Ride Sheffield evidenced the increasing focus being placed on cycling by the local community. The recent 850,000 cycling hub installed at Sheffield train station is a small step in the right direction, but there is still far more that can be done to improve cycling in Sheffield.

With a passionate sporting public, Sheffield is perfectly placed to host big sporting events – particularly with relation to cycling. With the Peak District on the front doorstep of the city, there is plenty of scope for cycling in the neighbouring countryside as well.
